Instead of a central authority, market economies use prices to allocate scarce resources. Counterproductive incentives also arise in these centralized systems, as we’ll discuss later. The problem with this method is that economies are so complex, with many millions of products and services, that allocating resources optimally across millions of items is incredibly difficult. The Soviet Union operated similarly, with the government determining how much steel to produce in Bulgaria and how much wheat to be grown in Ukraine. In a feudal economy, the lord tells people what to grow and how to sell it. The straightforward way is for a central authority to decide what to do. ![]() How are scarce resources allocated across an economy? The decisions around how to allocate these scarce resources to produce the best output is the central question of economics.Įconomics is not about making moral judgments about what choices are morally better than others, just as mathematics doesn't explain love. There has never been enough resources to satisfy everyone completely - tradeoffs must be made on an individual and societal level. What is economics? Economics is the study of the use of scarce resources that have alternative uses, and how to allocate these resources to maximize output. 1-Page Summary 1-Page Book Summary of Basic Economics ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A renowned Stanford study showed that working long hours doesn’t make you more productive. ![]() Will you work for an hour, 90 minutes, or two hours? I wouldn't recommend any more than two. Avoid saying, “I'm going to work till I run out of things to do….or until I run out of energy.” That is the endless work trap. Here’s how:īefore diving back into work mode, pre-determine exactly how long you're going to spend on your computer. The key is to orchestrate your evening realistically for both work and rest. When you absolutely, positively must get back on the computer at night, there are concrete ways to contain it. Whether it’s due to an overwhelming workload, an understaffed team, or your own preference to have a sharp end to your workday to spend time with your family or at the gym, there are times when you truly need to log back into your computer in the evening to finish some critical tasks.īut you don’t have to fall into an endless work trap leaving no time to renew. It’s a common struggle to have more to do than fits in a workday. But what happens when you truly must get back online to work in the evening after dinner, social or family time to keep on top of your workload? I hear it often from clients. ![]() We all have the best intentions to contain our work to the workday and create clear boundaries between our work and personal lives. ![]() ![]() Her novels range from serious issues like schizophrenia ( Finding Alice) to lighter topics like house-flipping ( A Mile in My Flip-Flops) but most of the inspiration behind her fiction comes right out of real life. By Sadie Stein FebruOur Daily Correspondent ![]() ![]() The religious war was becoming more of a political war. The Swedes were financially supported by Catholic France and the Protestant Dutch Republic in the fight against the Austrian Habsburgs. ![]() To secure his lands against the Habsburg threat, Gustavus Adolphus, the Lutheran King of Sweden, invaded northern Germany in 1630. Ferdinand II controlled most of Germany at this point. Imperial and Catholic League forces defeated Christian IV at the battle of Lutter (1626) and Wolgast (1628), forcing him to withdraw from the struggle in the Treaty of Lübeck (1629). In 1625, the Lutheran Christian IV of Denmark (who was also the Duke of Holstein) intervened in the German crisis. Before long the Imperial, Catholic League, and Spanish armies occupied the Palatinate, forcing Frederick V to flee to the Dutch Republic. In 1621, Spain and the Dutch Republic, after the Twelve Year Truce (1609-1621), renewed their fight in the Low Countries and German Rhineland. But the rebels were defeated by the armies of Ferdinand II and the Catholic League at the battle of White Mountain (1620). The rebels sought to replace Ferdinand by electing Frederick V, a Calvinist and Elector of the Rhine Palatinate, to the Bohemian crown.
